Welcome to Cape Oval Dirt Karting…more about our club and the sport:
The objective of Cape Oval Dirt Karting is to promote motor sport in all its branches and to encourage social activities between the persons engaged in such sport. We endeavour to bring affordable racing to the general public.
Karting is a sport for the whole family. There is no better way to start your career as a dirt track kart driver knowing that in the future the V8′s are awaiting you on the big oval or main circuit. Needless to say that many Formula One drivers have also started their careers racing in karts.
The general spirit in the Club runs high and the atmosphere resembles one big family. We are proud of our sense of caring and when in need there will always be someone to help.
And when we race, we race a good one – AND HAVE FUN!
Where it all started:
Dirt Karting in the Western Cape started in 2003 as a fun event for a couple of guys racing round a dirt track packed out with tyres in Malmesbury. Interest exceeded all expectations and very soon Malmesbury Go-Kart Club was started. Enthusiasm mounted amongst the adrenaline junkies and quite a number of drivers from the Tygerberg area went to Malmesbury to participate on a regular basis.
Where the hobby of a few guys has now developed into a full on sport, Cape Oval Dirt Karting was founded on 13 October 2004. At this meeting the first committee was elected with Koos Human the chairman and Claude Justus as secretary / treasurer. The Constitution provides for a non-profitable, non-racial organization open to anyone who endorses the aims of the Club.
On 3 December 2005 all members joined forces to build our own track at Fisantekraal. With great enthusiasm and everyone lending a helping hand the track was completed within one day. Although this humble beginning of Cape Oval Dirt Karting was not the flagship we dreamt about, our first official race meeting on this track was held on 28 January 2006.
Where we are now:
From an uncertain start with a mere 8 members, the Club has grown tremendously and we could end the 2010/2011 season with almost a 100 enrolled members, of which about half were active driving members, ranging from 5 years of age to 60 and beyond. Our club sports about 50 karts racing at least once a month.
Oval Dirt Karting is offered in different classes, namely Juniors, 200cc, 300cc, 390cc and 425cc and genders compete equally. Karts used are all ex-main circuit frames powered by four-stroke industrial engines.
